Vålerenga down but far from out
The numbers have not been adding up for Martin Andresen in recent weeks but the player/coach insists that PAOK FC should count Vålerenga Fotball out at their peril when the teams reconvene next Thursday with the Greek side 2-1 ahead after the Norwegian leg of their UEFA Europa League third qualifying round tie.
'Strange games'
The reverse at the Ullevål Stadium followed four successive league defeats that had seen the Norwegian Cup holders slide into mid-table, but Andresen does not believe those statistics paint the full picture. "We've had some strange games lately," said the 32-year-old. "We've been better than our opponents in all of them. We've created more opportunities in every game but we've scored 12 per cent of our chances while our opponents have scored 42 per cent so we have to do better inside both boxes as that's where you win games."
Productive travels
His analysis was underlined by two goals in six minutes from Lino and Zlatan Muslimović for a clinical PAOK in Oslo with Jarl André Storbæk's strike just before the interval the only reply for the hosts. However, the numbers game may work in Vålerenga's favour for the return with their away performances netting more points and goals in the Eliteserien than their home ones. "We can be positive about our away form," said Andresen. "We are often better playing on the counterattack than trying to control the games. We can also hope that PAOK will not be properly prepared for the next game as they are still in pre-season. I think we can play at this level and do much better than in the first game."
Defensive problems
A victory in Thessalonika could spark a revival similar to the turnaround in their league form at the start of the campaign, where six victories in eight games followed a streak of one success in their opening seven domestic outings. Andresen will be preaching an attacking outlook for the return, particularly as Vålerenga are struggling to cope with absences at the heart of their defence. "We are struggling with defenders at the moment – we don't have any centre-backs due to injuries – so we will have to attack," he added. "We did that a few months ago when we won a number of games in a row so I am looking ahead and at how we can change things."
