Dikefalos (What this emblem mean?)

Hi there,

Sorry for the stupid question but can anyone explain what dikefalos is/are?? I see this everywhere but I have no idea what it means...
(sorry I'm new to PAOK and I don't speak Greek either...)

it means two-header (di-kefalos) the eagle with the two heads it was the emblem of the christians of byzantio before the catastrofy of konstantinople(in our days instabul....)..and it is now the official emblem of the orthodox church and paok of cource..it has great meaning for all

Thanks!! I know how this emblem is important and full of history but I didn't know that you called it Dikefalos...  Now I do! :)

Dikefalos ... means double headed ... its the double headed eagle the emblem of the last dynasty of the emperors in Constantinople before the capture from the Ottomans. After the fallen of the Constantinople ... it became the symbol of the Roms (Greek Orthodox Christians) who was enslaved to the Ottomans. Also it became the symbol of the hope of the re-generation of the nation.

In the original emblem which now, after 500 years is an ecclesiastical emblem also, was with the double-head eagle with open wings ... black color ... in yellow background. This original emblem is used from the fc AEK ... http://www.aek.gr/

Our grandparents who founded PAOK ... (PAOK are the initials of the Panthessalonician Atletic Omilos (club) of Konstantinoupolitians (Civilians of Constantinople who came as refugees from Constantinople and other areas of the Minor Asia in 1922)) ... so ... our grandparents ... decide to change the emblem and the colours of the original emblem. They decided to use the doublehead eagle with the wings closed ... to express the calamity ... the sadness of this situation ... and they decided to keep the black for the eagle ... to express the mourning of this situations but in a white background ... which express the hope .. for the new life ... and also ... the promise that one day we will liberate the land of our grandparents ...

I think this is the first time in my life that I see an emblem so full of historical meaning. It's beautiful!
I understand even more the passion and dedication you may have for this team.
Can't wait to go to the Toumba... (if the bloody president walks away...)

Not sarkozi please.... I have the feeling he might become France's next president next year... which is not good at all, believe me... :S

How come you know him??

I think that Sarkozi's parents are Jews from Thessaloniki. Am i wrong?

I've just checked and here is what I found:
Sarkozy was born in France from a Hungarian father and a French mother. However, his grand-father on his mother side (Benoit Mallah) was a Sephardic Ottoman Jew from Salonica.
Wikipedia says that according to Jewish genealogical societies, the Mallah family of Salonica anciently came from Provence in southern France, which they had probably left at the time of the Jewish expulsions in the Middle Ages.

In the middle age, Ferdinand the King of Spain force Jews to become Christians or leave his area. Thousands of thousands of Jews left Spain and through Italy they finally came in Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki became the first Jew city with the bigger Jew community worldwide. In the beggining of the 20th century, there the 48% of the population were Jews. They owned the historical center of the city and the most expensive areas. After the world war II, only 4.000 Jews left in the city, the other were killed by Nazi. Their properties are now belong to the Israelian Community of Thessaloniki. Also we still have the Hebrew Cemetery until now.

Actually ... this is Thessaloniki. Is like a big hug who accepts anyone who need help!!! This also happen nowadays. We have a lot of Russians, Georgians, Albanians immigrants.
